Boat Battery Care During Winter Storage: How to Prepare for Spring

Flooded, AGM, gel, and lithium batteries each store differently. How to inspect, charge, and isolate them before layup so spring launch is not an unexpected maintenance job.

A boat battery is easy to forget once the boat is covered for winter. Months later, a slow engine crank or an unresponsive electrical system can turn spring preparations into an unexpected maintenance job.

Good boat battery winter storage starts with identifying the battery type, preparing it correctly, and checking it during the off-season. The right approach depends on whether you have flooded lead-acid, AGM, gel, or lithium batteries—and your boat may have more than one type.

Start with an inspection and the correct charge

Check battery cases, terminals, cables, and hold-downs for damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Address a cracked or leaking battery before putting it into storage.

For serviceable flooded batteries, check electrolyte levels according to the manufacturer’s instructions and use distilled water where required. AGM and gel batteries should not be opened for watering.

Keep lithium battery storage instructions separate

Lithium marine batteries need their own storage plan. Follow the instructions for the exact model, including the recommended storage charge, temperature range, and any shutdown procedure.

Prevent small electrical loads from draining the battery

An unused boat can still have equipment drawing power. Turning off the main battery switch may leave directly connected circuits energized.

For a boat stored ashore, identify those loads and follow the boat’s procedure for isolating batteries or disconnecting cables. If the boat remains afloat, preserve power to essential equipment such as automatic bilge pumps and monitoring systems.

Also check each battery separately. A charger connected to the house bank does not necessarily maintain an independent generator or starting battery.

Choose a suitable storage and charging arrangement

Whether batteries stay aboard or are removed, provide a secure location within their specified storage-temperature range. Keep terminals protected against accidental short circuits.

  • Inspect cases, terminals, cables, and mounting hardware.
